PSA: About Filthy Fabulous

With the release of the “Filthy Fabulous” set I wanted to talk about poverty and homelessness. Although my intention was never to glamorize this very serious issue, the connection between the two is still there. I want you all to know I care very deeply about this and it is something I personally experienced as a teenager. I grew up in poverty and there were several times me and my family were sleeping in our car (if we had one) or couch surfing. Even here in the US, millions of people are without homes every year.

I came across this article published by the Wire in September 2021 and it broke my heart to see an outside perspective on the “Rags To Riches” challenge and how it hurt someone to see it. I hope and believe simmers have the best intentions and this is a challenge that adds some gameplay where there is an inherent lack of depth in the game.

But one thing we can also do is educate ourselves, reach out to others in need, and give when we can. A good friend and simmer, AsisLavender, made a great point about using this as an opportunity to learn.

One thing that I hope about the rags to riches challenge is that it helps people understand what sorts of challenges people face - not just food, but finding shelter from extreme temperatures, safe places to use the restroom, even just changing clothes and doing laundry. And learning to be considerate of things like 'fun' needs. A home should not be prerequisite for having comforts.

I have included all of the resources I could find for anyone needing help or looking for more information. If there are any I missed please let me know so I can add them. I hope you all enjoy the Filthy Fabulous set and remember that people face these challenges everyday and they deserve our compassion.
