CC & Mod File Types

There are two types of custom downloadable content for the Sims 4 – typically referred to as mods and custom content (CC). In general, mods are .ts4script files and cc are .package files. Sometimes mods come with both .ts4script and .package files.

Custom Content

  • .package file extension
  • Typically objects & clothing (CAS)
  • Can be installed up to 5 folders deep inside your Mods folder

					Documents\Electronic Arts\The Sims 4\Mods

Script Mods

  • .ts4script file extension
  • Larger gameplay modifications & enhancements
  • Typically comes with accompanying .package files
  • Can only be installed one folder deep inside your Mods folder

					Documents\Electronic Arts\The Sims 4\Mods

Sims & Lots

  • File extensions can be any of the following:
    • .trayitem
    • .blueprint
    • .room
    • .householdbinary
    • .bpi
  • All of these file types need to be placed in your ‘Documents > Electronic Arts > The Sims 4 > Tray‘ Folder

					Documents\Electronic Arts\The Sims 4\Tray

Other File Types

Configuration Files

  • .cfg file extension
  • Configuration settings for mods
  • Not all script mods will have a .cfg file
  • Created after the first time you play with the mod installed
  • Deleting them will delete all of your settings for that mod
  • MC Command Center is one mod that uses .cfg files

Note: The Sims 4 also creates a .cfg file which is different than the .cfg files that come with mods. Don't delete the .cfg file generated by the game or your settings will be reset.

Text Files

  • .txt file extension
  • Not all CC or script mods will have a .txt file
  • Contain important information about the mod/cc (ex: updates & installation instructions)
  • You can safely leave these files inside your mods folder or delete them
  • Make sure to read any .txt files before using the mod/cc

Zip/RAR Files

Many mods and cc sets are downloaded in a compressed format. The most common types are .zip and .rar file extensions. This is simply a way of grouping files into one folder for easier downloading.

These types of files need to be ‘unzipped’ before installing in your Mods folder. You can do this several ways.

How to Unzip a File

Do not put .zip or .rar files directly in your mods folder. The Sims 4 will not recognize them as CC and can potentially cause issues.
